Annie Walker: Altitude Adjustments

BEING BROKEN OPEN BY PLACE

Altitude Adjustments is Annie Walker’s record of prolonged solitude in California’s High Sierra, developed between summers in Yosemite’s backcountry and a permanent life in South Lake Tahoe.

In this landscape, wilderness is not backdrop. It is intimate, constant, and invasive, collapsing the distance between environment and interior state. Over time, the mountains stop being scenery and become something you can’t look away from.

PERCEPTION, DISTORTION, ENDURANCE

The paintings are built through dense physical accumulation, surface as memory, erosion, and pressure. Activated by RGB light, they shift between clarity and instability, echoing altered perception shaped by grief, solitude, and self-examination. Sculptures constructed from discarded studio materials extend this into three dimensions, reconfiguring remnants into forms of persistence and reinvention.

Altitude Adjustments is a record of being altered by place. Broken open, reconfigured, and remade through endurance.

THE ARTIST:

Annie Walker is a visual artist based in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Her practice is rooted in the physical and psychological experience of wilderness, developed through extended periods of solitude in California’s High Sierra. Working across heavily textured painting and sculpture built from discarded materials, Walker constructs worlds where perception is unstable and survival is ongoing.
